Our world is in the midst of everything where change is rapid. Cultural norms, social norms as well as global concerns are changing in an instant and leave many in a state of confusion. For Christians it is an important question: How do we manage these shifting waters while remaining true to the faith we have? The answer is in the spiritual knowledge–the kind that is derived from the timeless wisdom of Scripture and the always-present direction by God’s Holy Spirit.
The faith of a person isn’t just an annual Sunday service or Sunday sermons online; it’s a daily guide. If society is faced with problems such as injustice, division or moral uncertainty and moral ambiguity, it is our responsibility to be a part of the solution–not through judgment but instead by demonstrating grace, clarity and understanding. The spiritual wisdom of God allows us to face these problems with hearts that reflect Christ’s compassion, and with a mind strengthened by the Word of God
If we act with compassion with respect and compassion, we follow Jesus’ model. Jesus did not dismiss or shame people who came to Him in a state of struggle or with questions. He was there to help them, listened to their demands, and guided towards the truth.
Within your congregation as well as in other settings, listening could be transformative. This opens the door to genuine conversations and allows for the Spirit to direct to respond with wisdom and not with impulsivity.
Navigating social challenges often demands courage. Problems such as gender identities, marriage and racial harmony, as well as the economic divide require thoughtful solutions that are rooted in Biblical truth. However, being firm in your stand isn’t a sign of becoming combative or brutal. Scripture warns us that “Let your gentleness be evident to all” (Philippians 4:5).
It’s not weakness but it’s a strength that is controlled. It’s being able to discern when it is appropriate to speak, and the right time to be silent and challenging others, as well as when to ease. The balance of these two is an attribute of spiritual wisdom. It allows our faith to be steadfast on the Word of God while also extending his grace to the people who are around us.
Jesus invites His followers “the salt of the earth” as well as “the light of the world” (Matthew 5:13-16). The metaphors of these verses are just as pertinent in the present as they have ever been. Salt keeps flavors and preserves them in the same way that the lives we live should be a testament to the truth of God and provide an aroma of happiness and optimism to the people who we meet. The light of the sun shatters darkness and provides direction and clarity in a world that is often clouded with despair and uncertainty.
The practice of living as light and salt isn’t about escaping society, but rather taking part in it with purpose. If you’re serving the hungry, guiding the young or just providing encouraging words, the actions you take founded on spiritual wisdom may create a change beyond what you can imagine.
Every social problem is best met through prayer. Prayer is a way to align our minds with God’s plan and allowing our eyes to God’s wisdom. The discipline of discernment, a result by prayer and the Bible allows us to see past the surface to the deeper implications of the issue.
